As per tradition, every year at the beginning of September the Ethnographic open-air museum “Etar" gathers master craftsmen both from afar and from the surrounding areas to show their skills and unique works before the multitude of visitors of the International fair of traditional crafts.

The Fair organizers are Ministry of Culture, Gabrovo Municipality, Ethnographic open-air museum “Etar". The event is held under the patronage of Mrs. Tsetska Tsacheva – Chairperson of the National Assembly of Bulgaria.

Art Textile Exhibition “Weaving Techniques Resurrected” by Stoyna Krastanova
September 2nd– 6ᵀᴴ, opening: 11:00 AM

Stoyna Krastanova was born on December 31, 1923 in Galabovo village, Plovdiv region. She is a member of the Fellowship of masters of folk and art crafts since 1968. For many years she has been actively working in the field of textile crafts (embroidery and weaving), recreating Bulgarian cultural heritage.

In her exhibition “Weaving techiniques resurrected” Stoyna Krastanova presents a collection of her own works, where old techniques used in Coptic, Byzantine and Bulgarian woven ornaments have been rediscovered and applied in a new manner.

This collection can be seen in the Exhibition hall next to the Herb shop.
Exhibition-bazaar “Woodcarving”
September 2nd opening: 11:30 AM

In addition to the works of Anton Nikolov, the winner in the Masters' competition “Woodcarving” in 2015, this year's exhibition-bazaar will also feature works of the other master craftsmen who took part in the competition.

The exhibition will be open for visitors intil September 30th.
XII International scientific conference “Traditional crafts — past, present, future”

The international scientific conference is an accompanying event at the Fair in which experts from Bulgaria and abroad present their scientific research.
Craftsman's competition “Tablet weaving of belts”
September 2nd, begins: 1:30 PM
September 5th, ends: 3:00 PM

In 2014 the craft “Tablet weaving of belts” was proclaimed one of the masterpieces of the Bulgarian intangible cultural heritage. There will be 7 participants in this year's edition of the Craftsman's competition and a jury of experts will announce the winner, who will receive the grand prize “Silver cowbell”, as well as the right to set up an exhibition-bazaar at the museum in 2017.
International exhibition-bazaar of traditional crafts

The goal of the fair exhibition is to present the preserved traditional techniques and the contemporary state of the traditional crafts. The works that the master craftsmen show at the fair exhibition are expected to meet certain special criteria: they should be handcrafted using with traditional tools; the components and raw materials they are made of should be typical of the respective crafts; the works should preserve the connection with traditional rites and rituals.
Rare textile techniques – presentation and bazaar
September 3th – 4th, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM

The focus of this year's edition of the International Fair of traditional crafts will be on the presentation of the following home occupations:
  • needle lace (kene);
  • crafting of braided items and braided clothing decoration;
  • felt making;
  • dyeing of traditional slippers from the Rhodope region;
  • traditional embroidery;
  • Kalofer and Brussels lace (point – lace);
  • articles crafted using the macrame technique;
  • traditional knitting, spinning and combing with a carder; weaving;
  • plaiting of strings for bags and strainers;
  • knitting of mats and other articles using corn husks;
  • making of bead belts;
  • tatting lace, etc.
Children's Programme
September 3th – 6th, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

In the children’s corner of the Museum the programme “Discover what you can do” allows children to become acquainted with different crafts and household activities using the “study by trial” method. The thematic workshops, organized as part of the Fair, give our young visitors the opportunity to make traditional items used in different rites and celebrations and to discover the secrets of various crafts with the help of master craftsmen and expert ethnographers.
Re-enactments and demonstration of home occupations and traditional customs
September 3th – 6th, 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Presentation of home occupations representative of the traditional Bulgarian lifestyle — smoking of plums, dyeing of woolen yarn with natural dyes, baking of sourdough bread, etc. Entertaining re-enactments of sedyanka (traditional gathering with music, songs and rituals) and other folk customs.
